Iva Landsmannová: Homecoming - A Once In a Lifetime Experience

Iva Landsmannová teaches English language at Civil Engineering High School in Brno. During the Fall of 2021, she participated in the Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achivement Program at Kent State University in Ohio. Together with Czech colleagues Šárka Opatová from Gymnázium Děčín and Karel Buchta from Gymnázium Šlapanice and about two dozen other  teachers from Central, Northern and Eastern Europe, they spent six weeks in the U.S., focusing on strategies to broaden critical thinking and media literacy in their classrooms back home. Because of the ongoing pandemic, their stay started with a week-long quarantine period at a hotel, but afterwards, the program continued as usual. During the workdays, the group participated in classes and workshops at the university, and Tuesdays were reserved for visits to local high schools. During the weekends, the participants explored Ohio and some other sites, including Niagara Falls. They also experienced U.S. culture when spending time wi...

Erin Dusza: The Slav Epic - A Big Check on My Academic Bucket List

Erin Dusza is a Ph.D. Candidate from Indiana University conducting research for her dissertation through Masaryk University in Brno. Her research at the Faculty of Arts concerns the 19th Century construction of Czech history in aid of nationalism. Erin arrived in the Czech Republic in September 2021, accompanied by her husband Alex and their dog Archie. In January 2022, right in the middle of her 9-month Fulbright stay, she invited her fellow grantees on a trip to Moravský Krumlov to visit The Slav Epic, a collection of 20 large-format canvases by famous Art Nouveau artist Alfons Mucha. Erin's academic interest in Mucha started during her Masters program at Georgia State University, when she researched the portrayal of nationalism in Central and Eastern Europe, which is an area not commonly covered in art history textbooks. Excited about finally having the opportunity to see this influential art collection in person, Erin encourages more Fulbrighters to: "Contact me and we can...

Katrin Wolfová: New York State of Mind

You name it!

Saemyi, Anna, Maddie & Madison: Světlá nad Sázavou Project Day

Anna, Maddie, Saemyi and Madison arrived in the Czech Republic in August 2021 to assist with English language education at Czech high schools in Litomyšl, Kolín, Světlá nad Sázavou and Jaroměř as Fulbright grantees. All of them met for the first time at the in-country training that the Fulbright Commission hosted during the last week of August at Castle Liblice, located about 30 miles North of Prague. The training for the 33 English Teaching Assistants who are currently placed at high schools all over the Czech Republic took five days. For the last two days, Czech high school teachers, who serve as mentors of Fulbright ETAs during their whole 10-month stay joined as well. To encourage communication and cooperation among grantees and teachers placed nearby, all American grantees and their Czech hosts were grouped into so-called “nests.” Some nests are nice and tight, with grantees located within 30 minutes away of each other, while other grantees have to travel a bit more. Looking at th...

Bojana Kljunićová: Hudební výchova v Čechách

Bojana Kljunićová již 12 let vede Fakultní  základní uměleckou školu Hudební a taneční fakulty Akademie múzických umění (AMU) v Praze, a na Hudební a taneční fakultě AMU navíc působí jako odborná asistentka. V roce 2014 strávila čtyři měsíce na Aaron Copland School of Music při Queens College University v New Yorku.

Hana Ripková: 30 Years of Fulbright Czech Republic

While the Fulbright Program worldwide  is 75 years old this year, the Czech Fulbright program has just reached 30. The last months have not been easy for an exchange program. We were able to move many of our activities on-line but the core experience, the in-person exchange, is now finally getting back to speed. We hope to be able to observe the changes in our grantees when we meet them at the very beginning of the program and then at its end. Instead of parties and conferences, we asked many of you to become the Faces of Fulbright in our series of interviews made together with Vedator . Some of the other alumni were interviewed by Veronika Bednarova, our alumna, for the Fulbright Podcast .  Together with Lucie Žáčková, we prepared a detailed sociological survey where we asked our Czech and American alumni sets of questions relevant to their Fulbright experience.  Photo: Sociological survey report conducted for Fulbright by Lucie Žáčková, September 2021.
