Fulbright Reality Czech

Allison Hafner, Anna Shepard,  Bianca McNeely, Bree Patzke, and Emma Holdren are alumni of the Fulbright ETA Program. During the past academic year, they taught at High School Kaplice, Gymnázium and Nursing School in Vyškov, Gymnázium Lesní čtvrť in Zlín, the Engineering High School and Business Academy in Bruntál, and Gymnázium Sušice. Each host school and town offered a unique experience, but throughout their grants, they all found themselves asking the same question: How can they meaningfully contribute to the relationship between the United States and the Czech Republic and, in doing so, fulfill the Fulbright mission of serving as so-called citizen diplomats?  In mid-April, the five alumni represented the Czech Fulbright Commission at the ETA Enrichment Seminar, Bridging the Atlantic: 250 Years of Diplomacy and Shared Prosperity, in Bratislava. Ryan Williamson is a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant. With a BBA in Business Honors, a minor in International Trade and Agriculture, and plans to promote agricultural diplomacy, Ryan applied for the Fulbright ETA Program with impressive mentoring and facilitation experience, but no prior experience living abroad. Given his background, the Agricultural School in Benešov was a natural fit. During his Fulbright year, Ryan not only immersed himself in Czech school life and culture but also represented the Czech Fulbright Commission at the EU–US Young Leaders Seminar in Brussels. There, he engaged with inspiring speakers, exchanged ideas with peers about the challenges facing today's workforce, and explored the opportunities and implications of artificial intelligence. Maria Vostrizansky is an English Teaching Assistant in the Czech Republic during the 2024-25 academic year. She teaches English at Gymnázium Jihlava, working with students aged 11 to 19. Maria graduated from Alma College, Michigan, in 2024 with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and History and will pursue a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy at The Fletcher School, Tufts University, in 2025. Her research interests center on international relations, particularly the evolving roles of Eastern European countries in global diplomacy. Až skoro po dvou měsících svého pobytu v USA jsem si konečně uvědomil, do jak prestižního klubu jsem se díky Fulbrightově stipendiu dostal a jak moc s tím vlastně mohu dokázat. Od začátku jsem k tomu celému okolo Fulbrighta přistupoval se svou vrozenou skromností a byl vždy překvapen, když mě kolegové při představování na fakultě v Louisville plácali po ramenou a s respektem pokyvovali hlavou. Připadal jsem si zvláštně, jelikož jsem si myslel, že jsme tím, že jsem odcestoval za oceán, jsem přece tolik nedokázal. Už jsem přece přežil rok na studiích v Turecku a pak se tam vrátil i na půlroční pracovní stáž, takže Amerika pro mě byla jen další krok. Však díky zdlouhavému a nákladnému přihlašovacímu procesu, který začal v létě 2011, jsem tušil, že tohle vydrží jen ti nejlepší a že je to vlastně takový křest úřednickým ohněm. Sice jsem byl už trochu natrénovaný z přihlášky na Erasmus, ale Fulbright je opravdu jiná liga! Fulbright stipendisté mění svět! Své věrné čtenáře...
