Šestitýdenní Fulbright kurz v Ohiu začíná

Takhle jsem si v prosinci představovala svou cestu za velkou louži. Se Zdeňkou jsme vyrážely z Prahy ještě před kuropěním. A dneska je čtvrtek 30. ledna, druhý den v Kentu je za námi a já se po změně času začínám orientovat v prostoru, tak je čas začít psát blog.
Cesta byla dloouhá, ale překvapivě pohodlná. V Detroitu jsme se sešly s Julií, kolegyní z Rumunska a pak už jen půl hodinky do Clevelandu a autem do Kentu. Čekalo nás vřelé přivítání, většina účastníků kurzu se sešla u večeře, seznamování a pak pád do spánku a množství snů, probouzení a usínání...
Dnes je sobota, dopoledne máme volno, domluvily jsme se s dalšími čtyřmi účastnicemi, že se půjdeme projít kolem řeky. Čerstvý vzduch! Máme program od rána do večera, pořád jsme v klimatizovaných místnostech, to samé v hotelu - okno není možné otevřít - z důvodu bezpečnosti! To mám za to, že pořád na všechny otevírám okno, chápu, spravedlivá odplata.
Takže příjemná procházka, pak menší nákup, koupila jsem si vitamíny, protože zdejší sandvičovo-hranolková strava asi bude pokračovat. A podle sortimentu v oddělení doplňků stravy a obchodu hned vedle to vypadá, že spánek tu začíná být obtížně dosažitelný stav.
Tak a ještě mám půl hodiny volno, jaký luxus! Ale program napěchovaný, ovšem vůbec si nestěžuju. Jsme jako v bavlnce, postaráno je o všechno. Na včerejší přednášce Healthy and safe American living jsme dostali i jelení lůj, náplasti a desinfekční gel a taky jsme cvakli první společné foto.
Uprostřed je paní policistka, která nás stylem našich bezpečáků proškolila na téma střelec v kampusu, což bylo něco pro mě, ale pak nám vyprávěla, jak jejích 5 náctiletých dcer chodí do různých škol, takže jsem se zas hodila do klidu.

Ale popořadě: Nejdřív byly dny vítání a orientace, všichni byli moc milí a neustále nám gratulovali, začínám si připadat děsně důležitě.
Na oficiální snídani byli ředitelé škol, kde budeme pracovat, zástupci univerzity, města a snad by dorazili i dva senátoři, kdyby býval neprobíhal impeachment.

A zase se školíme a školíme a já už jsem zahájila i mediální vzdělávání :-)

Czech Prom Season: A Story of a Feathered Raffle Win

Usually a few weeks before graduation, boys ask girls to the prom. Girls buy a fancy dress, and boys a nice suit with a matching tie. Prom night consists of about an hour of picture taking with your date and friend group, followed by a ride to prom in a nice car or a limo. The dance itself is about three hours long, and the only people in attendance are typically students at the school with a handful of teacher chaperones. After prom ends, around 10 or 11 p.m., all the students leave and go their separate ways for the night, usually to a post-prom hang out. After attending six (and counting!) Ian Zwaschka: The Czech Republic Was Once Just a Postcard

Ian Zwaschka is a high school English  teacher. In 2024/2025 he served at the Petr Bezruč Gymnázium in Frýdek-Místek as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant. With a BA in English, Creative Writing, and Cinema, and a year of teaching in South Korea under his belt, he slipped into the rhythm of a Czech college-prep high school as if he’d been there for years. During his grant, Ian energized students with a popular improv club, joined the local folk band Ondrášek on stage, presented at an academic conference, and dove into Czech lessons so he could chat with locals instead of relying on wild gesturing.
